Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and therefore I am putting in my annual plug for "Please go get your mammogram!" Although this is a blog dedicated to coupons/ saving money/ shopping, this one issue is very near and dear to my heart.
My mother had breast cancer not so long ago and the things I saw her have to endure (chemo/ radiation/ losing her hair, feeling awful...) I wouldn't wish anyone to have to see their mother (or anyone else they love) have to endure. Although this only added to my already immense respect, admiration and love for my mother and all of her wonderful qualities (she's my hero), it was difficult to see her have to go through all that. I feel extremely blessed that she not only survived it, and is stronger because of her experiences, but is still here to be one of my very best friends. Please....spare those who love you as well as spare yourself, go get checked...it doesn't take long to do, and it can save your life!!!! Tell those around you to go get theirs, too!
Become a member of Viva Towels Divas and $5 will be donated in your name to breast cancer research. Here's thelink:

Keeping spending low
All*You Magazine's October issue is out at Wal-Mart now to mixed couponer reviews, apparently due to the coupons this month being a little more sparse than last month. I love the mag, myself. In this month's issue (the cover has cupcakes with candy spiders on it) they give a few tips to save money. (Check page 145.) They suggest: giving yourself an "allowance" by giving yourself a set limit you can spend each week and when you stay under that, reward yourself a bit. Carrying minimal amounts of cash, so you aren't tempted to buy on impulse. Using gift cards for necessities, instead of cash if you prefer, so that impulse buys will also be kept low. Ditching your credit card because they lead to overspending and large fees. Dave Ramsey (the financial guru so many of us like) suggests using cash for purchases because actually seeing it leave your hands makes it harder to spend. My personal suggestion is to plan trips to the store wisely, having a list and knowing pretty exactly what you are shopping for. Money Saving Mom (Crystal) also suggested that you limit your shopping trips to once a week as it cuts down on spending. I have found that to be valuable advice. Let me know your saving strategies! We can always use tips on this! Happy saving!
Olay for you/ Sally
If you have ever gone to the drug store (during an ECB deal perhaps) and looked at all the skin care products, it can be a bit overwhelming (it was for me.) I have used many different kinds/ brands of products over the last several years... Olay has a site where you can see which of their specific products is right for your skin (tailored to individuals) and when their little presentation is finished, they ask you if they can add you to their mailing list for product samples and coupons. If you like Olay stuff, it's worth the 2-3 minutes to make sure you are getting the right products for your skin.
Sally Hansen's site has a quiz you can take (15 second thing about your likes/ dislikes) and when you enter your email address, they will send you some samples/ coupons. (Sally stuff is often an ECB deal product and their coupons often seem to have long expiration dates! LOVE those kinds of coupons, don't you?) Go here: http://www.haveuseensally.com/

The name Coupon Babe
Recently in telling a friend about my blog address - I advised her to "just Google it". Happily, in following my own advice, just for kicks, I found many of my posts from my blog and I was excited that I found it so easily! However, I also found some posts to another blog (someone elses' blog) , describing their unhappiness with dealings with someone else who also had the name "couponbabe". These dealing apparently (from what I could gather) occurred sometime in the last year around November 2007. My own couponing obsession didn't start until July of 2008, so I was very happy these things that were being said were definately not directed at my blog or at me personally, however it did make me feel that a clarification on my blog was necessary, in case there were others who unfortunately also ran across this. Please I will reiterate again, know that those comments were NOT ABOUT ME or about this blog. Had I known someone else out there had chosen the name "Couponbabe" and was doing these things, I never would have started this blog with the name "Couponbabe".
My intention with this blog, as I stated in the description, is simply to save myself and others money, and hopefully also save them some time and trouble. I do not, and never have participated in anything illegal or immoral. It is against everything I believe in.

Help for new couponers
I have had a lot of people ask me questions recently, and I thought I would share my answers with all of you. Let me know your thoughts! I always love to hear your comments!
You are so organized! but, doesn't that take you a lot of time every week?
I don't have that kind of time.
I have to admit, that statement always makes me laugh - "so organized"... I often feel I am probably the least organized person in America. But, as for couponing taking time well yes, it does. But you know, I look at this as a part time job that earns money for my family. I personally feel if we have to spend all the time we do making the money in the first place, we ought to be able to keep as much of it as we can! (We both work outside the home.) It may take me time, but going into a store and coming out with 5 bags of things my family needs and uses, knowing I only spent $4.15 of my hard earned money feels really worth it to me! I do spend several hours each week, clipping, printing and organizing the coupons into piles to put into my binder, as well as spending a good hour perusing the Sunday Ads to find the best place to save money on the things we need. (It also takes time to post them on here, to hopefully help you save money too, so please feel free to comment on what is/ is not helpful!) I found that getting originally organized was a bit of a bear but after that, not so bad. I have taught my kids how exactly I like my printed coupons cut, and we use the time to talk while they help me cut them out. I also came up with a poster board that is divided into the same categories as my coupon binder, so I can cut, place them on the appropriate square on the poster board, and them just put them in my binder. (A lot less time!) So, overall it may take me some time to do this, but it sure is nice to know the money that took me all week to earn is at least going as far as I can stretch it!
Do you seriously carry that thing around with you all over the place? (Binder)
Yes, I do. Much to my husband's dismay. He isn't the couponaholic that I am yet, although he loves the money we save when we use it. It's amazed me the deals I have found just having it with me (thankfully). And it has made me feel awful the deals I had to pass by when I didn't! Having my binder with me makes me feel 'prepared'. However, I try to only go shopping once a week if I can help it because I think you really save yourself a lot more money by limiting your shopping trips to once per week. I do have to admit though, I feel a little naked without my coupon binder! Tee hee!
Don't you feel poor using coupons?
Nope, not at all. Statistics show that the people who use coupons and couponing systems the most are upper middle-class women/ men with a high education level (college or higher). I have to admit, when I first thought about using coupons - before I researched anything about it, I thought people would look down on me...but the truth of the matter is, a lot of people tell me they admire me for it, and have often given me good suggestions, or told me about their own couponing experiences! These are nice, educated, smart people (both women and men!) and I am proud to be in their company! (People like you!) I often hand out coupons I know I will not use to people who are looking at that item. I have never once been told "No, thanks." People like coupons. They like holding on to their own money. Especially now it seems, with the economy the way it is.
I don't really want to use coupons because
I am afraid I will buy things I don't really want or need.
Rookie mistake, really. When people first start using coupons, alot of time they will buy things that aren't real good deals just because they have a coupon they either got from the Sunday paper they paid for or because they printed it off the internet, which they also felt they had 'paid for' because they used the ink from their printer. We all feel that way at first. It's real hard in the beginning to just let some of them expire. But you need to..... wait for the good deals, then use them! There are always deals out there....wait for a good sale or a clearance rack even, and then use it. If it expires and you didn't get a chance to use it, so what! Some coupons really aren't that useful. If you miss a deal, don't stress. Another one will come around soon enough. Just wait.
Is it really worth it to do this?
Yes, it is. I am someone who believes in having a years' supply of things your family needs on hand at your house in case of emergency. Doing this has enabled me to get a years' supply of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, razors, feminine products, cleaning products, etc., for either free or next to nothing. It does require some work but yeah, it's really worth it. It's one of the ways I feel I am making money for my family. I was telling a friend recently that going down the hair care/ beauty and housecleaning aisles in the grocery stores used to stress me a bit when I would go grocery shopping. I knew that spending money on those things would eat a chunk out of my wallet, and take food off my table, but that we needed those things. Now, I hardly ever have to pay for them, and when I do, it's usually next to nothing! When these things are on a great sale and I have matching coupons, I stock up big and don't have to buy them until they are on another great coupon-matching sale!
I don't buy all the things I post about. I don't need all of them. I post them in case you might need them. All our needs are different. If you are new to this, start slow...get one paper, print a few off the internet, and try yourself out at one store until you feel you have got it figured out. (Like CVS or Walgreens). Try a few rebate items, send them in or do them over the internet. Once you get into it, you'll see for yourself how worth it it is. You'll find yourself getting as giddy as I do over some great deal and all the money you saved. You feel as if you hit the lottery or something!
Do remember if you have any questions, send me an email or comment and I will be happy to answer the best I can. I hope some of this helps you!

"The List"
Since I don't shop on Sunday, I often use part of it as my preparation day for couponing for the upcoming week. I make a list of the local deals I find interesting, (or ones I want to check out further). I know a lot of people do this, but mine is centralized to my local area. My friends keep telling me to post them, so here we go. Let me know if you would like this to be an ongoing thing, and I will continue it. Please note, since I do not have babies in my home, I don't really keep close watch on Baby items, although I do try to spot a good deal (I give my baby coupons to friends, so it's difficult to do match-ups. Feel free to let me know the match-ups you find.)

When to buy what
Here is the general rundown of what is on sale when (and when to stock up on) what exactly. (This is the time to stock up on certain things because the deals are at their general best and coupon match ups will be easier to do! Here goes:
In January:
Quaker brand cereals, Pepsi and Pepsi/ Tostino brands. ( I hear you can find alot of rebates as well.) Chilis, and things for heavy or warm meals. White sales are usually going on now, sports and weight loss things, computers, winter clothing and anything to organize your home. (People are cold and therefore stuck inside, so they want to organize/ clean after the holiday madness.)
Look for post holiday wrapping paper and items for next year. (Superbowl!)
In February:
Food wise, it's about the same as January, but you can find deals on electronics, floor coverings, household stuff, furniture and candy. (Valentine's Day, still cold outside...)
In March:
Ok, this is supposedly frozen food month. Many stores offer deals on freezers. Between this month and next, look for deals on things for Spring Cleaning. Since it's also Easter time, you'll find deals on eggs, hams, Kraft products, paper towels, napkins and plates, beverages.
Also look for clothing deals, winter sporting equipment, gardening supplies, and luggage. (Spring Break....)
In April:
Look for Spring clothing, coats and things go on sale, paint and supplies as well as wall coverings, and Passover foods. Frozen pizzas.
In May:
Ok....since summer is around the corner, look for deals on BBQ Sauces and condiments, frozen veggies (since gardens are around the corner), baked beans, meats such as ribs, hot dogs and ground beef. Look for post holiday paper items to stock up for next year. A Lot of white sales, spring cleaning supplies, and deals on car care. Home repairs and maintenance, too. Look for deals on coke/ pepsi, bottled water, hot dogs and hamburger meats, condiments and plastic dinnerwares. Bug repellents and sun screens also are on sale now.
In June:
Summer clothes, pianos, tv's, building materials and dairy products.
In July:
Air conditioners, summer sporting equipment, sportswear, craft supplies, and the same food items as the previous month.
In August:
White sales (again but this time linen and towels), BBQ and patio equipment, Back to school supplies, bathing suits, fresh fish and veggies, breakfast foods, items for lunch boxes.
In September:
(Back to school time!) Snacks!!! Pudding cups, capri suns, fruit snacks, cereals (big time), PB & J items, Prego also reportedly has great coupons about now (although they expire before next month because in October the spaghetti sauces will be on sale a good bit and apparently there is a war between Ragu adn Prego about this time every year.) Campbell's soups and lunchables.
Back to school anything, gardening supplies and housewares, bikes, and canned goods are on sale around this time. Frozen pizzas.
In October:
Stock up on all things holiday. Stuffing mix, turkey, instant potatoes, pudding, broth and cranberries, ice creams, marshmallows, pie crusts, crackers and whipped toppings. Kraft reportedly has great deals around this time, (ie: buy this get this free). Save some of your coupons for later on, though, because after Christmas food will be at a big discount! Green beans, french's fried onions, broth, etc., will be on big discount! Cars, houses, fishing equipment, glassware and crystal, candy (Halloween!) and baking/ candy making things.
In November:
Winter clothing, quilts, and heaters are on sale. Turkey, yams/ sweet potatoes, canned goods (soups, condensed and evap milk, veggies) and baking goods.
Finally, In December:
Toys! (Duh.) Gift items, party items and foods, post holiday items, meats, canned goods.
Don't forget that after holidays (year-round) you can find post holiday foods and cookie doughs on sale. Candy, popcorn, chips and snacky things you can usually find deals on all year, although moreso in the fall or winter. Frozen foods stay centralized to a certain brand then switch to another.
I hope this helps with your shopping and being able to stock up so that when the sales are gone you have a supply to last until the next sale on that item.
(Thanks, also to Hot Coupon World for the advice!)
